August 25: National Banana Split Day: --
Today's a day to go bananas! Give your taste buds the thrill of
delicious ice cream and luscious chocolate covering a fresh banana
topped off with nuts, a cherry and whipped cream. Surprisingly,
the original banana split wasn't created in an ice cream parlor
but in a Walgreens drug store in 1904. Banana splits were the
brainchild of David Evans Strickler, a pharmacist's apprentice who
enjoyed experimenting with new soda fountain sundaes in his free
time. They were so popular with the college crowd of nearby Saint
Vincent College that students willingly paid 10 cents, double the
price of a normal sundae. Word of mouth made it spread like
wildfire, and Charles Rudolph Walgreens further promoted the
banana split as their premium dessert, which caused a lot of
customers to try the dessert when they may have otherwise note
been interested in it. It soon became an American institution,
before going global. In 2004 Latrobe hosted the 100th anniversary
of the invention, the same year that it was certified as the
birthplace of the banana split by NICRA (National Ice Cream
Retailers Association). It also became the home of the Great
American Banana Split Celebration, a huge event with food and
events for everyone to take part in. Of course, like with all
great inventions, there is some contention about its origins
(unless you ask NICRA). Wilmington, Ohio claims that it was
invented there in 1907 in response to a slump in the ice cream
business thanks to the winter season. Whatever its origins, try a
banana split today and you'll understand why this amazing dessert
is a classic! It blends together the perfect flavor of bananas
with the rich sweet flavor of the ice cream, topped with whipped
cream, maraschino cherries, strawberries, hot fudge, and anything
else your heart can imagine! National Banana Split Day gives you
the perfect opportunity to tuck into this sweet treat. After all,
who doesn't love a delicious banana split? While bananas may be
covered in cream and a few other bad things when enjoyed as a
banana split, bananas themselves offer a number of different
health benefits. This can make you feel better about eating a
banana split! Bananas, for example, are an excellent source of
vitamin B6. Vitamin B6, in turn, provides a number of great
benefits. This helps us to maintain a healthy nervous system,
remove unwanted chemicals from your kidneys and liver, metabolize
amino acids, metabolize fats and carbohydrates, turning them into
energy, and produce red blood cells. The good news does not end
there. There are a number of other benefits that are associated
with bananas. This includes potassium, which meets around 10
percent of your potassium intake. It also contains manganese,
which helps to protect your skin through the creation of collagen,
as well as protecting other cells from free radical damage.
Bananas are also a great source of vitamin C. Vitamin C supports
brain health through the production of serotonin, which impacts
our moods, sleep cycle, and experiences of pain and stress.
Vitamin C helps your body produce collagen, absorb iron better,
and protect your body against tissue and cell damage. Today you
can enjoy one of these desserts (or several) and you don't need to
feel guilty about it! Music to our ears. Have fun trying out your
own banana split inventions. You won't regret it! On Sale Until

August 25: Kiss And Make Up Day: --
Today's the day to end your grudges against family, friends and
loved ones. After an argument, it's easy to be tempted not to
forgive. And it's easy to stay angry, but remember, it was Gandhi
who said that only the strong can forgive, and the weak can never.
Exercise your strength by forgiving - just kiss and make up! The
holiday was created by a woman named Jacqueline Milton to
re-examine old relationships and find ways to repair them. All
this is to say that today is the best day to bury the hatchet!
Kissing and making up - the two essential steps in a relationship
after any disagreement or feud with any friend, family member, or
your partner! The history of kissing and the history of making up
are two separate and interesting tales. The first texts (and we
mean ancient scriptures, not on your iPhone!) that mention kissing
date back to 1500 B.C. The people who wrote them lived in what we
today call India. At the time, they would frequently rub noses to
express romance - at some point, someone's face slipped, and the
joys of kissing were discovered! In 300 B.C., kissing spread out
of India, carried by Alexander the Great's conquering soldiers.
Soon, it was a worldwide phenomenon! Roman missionaries were sent
out across Europe to spread the word on kissing - with their own
lips. They even differentiated the types of kisses back then, from
the 'osculum' (friendship kiss) and the 'basium' (romantic
lip-to-lip kiss) to what would later be known as the French kiss!
Kisses became an extremely important part of cultures, so much so
that laws were passed around proper kissing, and kisses were
sometimes used to validate contracts in the absence of writing and
reading abilities. The popularity of kissing died out in England
around the 1660s, either due to restrictive church laws or the
Great Plague of London. Of course, it would become popular as a
gesture of friendship again, along with the handshake. Throughout
the next few centuries, kissing became the act we know it to be
today. However, kissing was very restricted in Hollywood for much
of the 20th century, though some films, like "The Kiss",
got away with it. There have also been many famous broken feuds
and grudges throughout the ages - whether or not they end in a
kiss! One well-known example is the Yorks v.s. the Lancastrians
when they feuded for the English crown in the 15th century.
Eventually, the war this feud gave way to (the War of Roses) was
ended when Henry IV married Elizabeth of York, thus uniting the
two families - with a kiss! On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT!

August 25: National Secondhand Wardrobe
Day: -- How many times have you bought an item of clothing, only
to wear it once or twice and throw it away after years of
collecting dust in the back of the closet? Sadly, the answer is
too many times. Thankfully, there's a movement taking place in
America that could help save us from our wasteful selves! Buying
clothes second hand and donating your used clothing creates a
positive cycle that is crucial for cutting back our waste.
Unfortunately, there's a stigma surrounding secondhand clothing
stores, or thrift shops, but it's time to bring this to light and
talk about why it's so flawed. Secondhand shopping saves you
money, has a positive impact on the environment, and if done
correctly, can certainly lead to a closet of some cool new duds.
So on August 25, head to your favorite thrift store and get some
new (old) threads! We are not advocating wearing tattered clothes
or items that are clearly unhygienic, but buying secondhand
clothes from reputable sources has so many great benefits that we
can't imagine why it gets frowned upon! The first and most obvious
benefit is the savings; you get articles for a fraction of the
price of retail. The clothes are in great condition, and if you
take your time, you can find vintage designer clothes or even
licensed merchandise. You will also find that, as compared to fast
fashion, the quality and longevity of secondhand clothing are
mostly better. The next and most important reason for buying
secondhand is to conserve the Earth's resources, decrease
pollution, and have a more sustainable lifestyle. Tons of clothing
is discarded and dumped in landfills, which is such a tragic
waste! Destroying the environment and wasting your hard-earned
money on new clothing just because a certain article is no longer
trendy is horribly wasteful. Before the Industrial Revolution,
clothing was expensive, limited, and not as easily disposable.
Following the Industrial Revolution, mass production of clothing
led to mass consumerism. Soon, people began buying clothes often
and tossing old ones out. And the stigma attached to secondhand
clothing - that it is a sign of lack of money - began rearing its
head. This changed when Christian ministries started drives to
collect clothing and accessories to resell to fund their programs.
Thrift stores started to pop up, benefiting and giving an
incentive to those who were providing charity services. Today, Gen
Zs and Millennials are active in promoting sustainable fashion and
reducing waste. 77% of Millennials prefer purchasing clothing that
is environmentally friendly. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT!

August 25: National Park Service Founders
Day: -- August 25, 1916: President Woodrow Wilson signs The
National Park Service Organic Act, thereby founding The United
States National Park Service, in order "to conserve the
scenery and the natural and historic objects and wildlife therein,
and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by
such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of
future generations". National Park Service Founders Day is an
annual observation on this date to recognize the superior
conservation and preservation efforts of the National Parks
System. Whenever you are enjoying scenic trails, open spaces,
watersheds, or recreational areas, remember that the National
Parks Service works hard to provide a natural outdoor resource
accessible to every American. They are also responsible for making
hiking and biking trails accessible to all of us. The National
Parks System is committed to creating outdoor experiences like no
other. All national parks in the US charm us with their beauty and
teach us so much about local geography and history. The first
national park, Yellowstone, was established in 1872. Congress
passed legislation to preserve the land as a public park that
would benefit the Americans. This made America the first country
in the world to create a public park solely for the benefit of its
citizens. This would be the first of many steps that the
government would take to create and preserve national land,
forests, coastal regions, wildlife refuges, and historic sites for
posterity. At the time when the National Park Service was founded,
there were only 33 federally created areas. This included the
National Capital Parks, the National Mall, and the White House in
Washington D.C. Today, there are more than 400 areas, including 59
fully designated national parks that are looked after by the
National Park Service. Covering more than 84 million acres, they
range from the tiny Thaddeus Kosciuszko National Memorial in
Pennsylvania of only .02 acres, to Alaska's Wrangell-St. Elias
National Park and Preserve spanning a vast 13.2 million acres. The
National Park Service has 22,000 workers who are involved in
permanent, temporary, and seasonal employment. An additional
340,000 volunteers are also enrolled with the service. These parks
welcome almost 300 million visitors every year. On Sale Until

first-ever televised congressional hearing when Whittaker
Chambers, a Soviet spy who was a writer and senior editor on the
staff of Time Magazine, and Alger Hiss, U.S. State Department
official, faced each other in a public hearing before the
committee at The Cannon Caucus Room, located in the Cannon House
Office Building. On July 31, 1948, the committee heard testimony
from Elizabeth Bentley, an American who had been working as a
Soviet agent in New York. Among those whom she named as communists
was Harry Dexter White, a senior U.S. Treasury department
official. On August 3, 1948: Whittaker Chambers testified under
subpoena before HUAC, naming more than a half-dozen government
officials, including Harry Dexter White and Alger Hiss, as being
spied for the Soviet Union while in federal service. Most of these
former officials refused to answer committee questions, citing the
Fifth Amendment. White denied the allegations, and died of a heart
attack a few days later. In an open letter dated August 24, 1948,
Hiss claimed that the committee needed to end its
"verdict-first-and-testimony later tactics." On August
25, 1948, HUAC called both Chambers and Hiss to appear together
before the committee in what became a media spectacle that played
out in front of the newly -born television network news television
cameras. There Chambers repeated his allegations, with Hiss
vehemently and categorically denied them. It was on this stage
that Richard Nixon first gained national attention as, being a
HUAC member, his persistence had helped break the Alger Hiss spy
case; while many committee members doubted Chambers' allegations,
Nixon believed them, and received secret information from the FBI
about the matter, and Nixon pressed for the committee to continue
its investigation. Hiss was ultimately convicted of perjury in
connection with this charge in 1950. Chambers became an
intellectual leader of the American Conservative movement after
1952. Hiss' friends and family continue to insist on his
innocence, though a growing body of evidence refutes this,
including revelations by KGB double agent Oleg Gordievsky that
Hiss was a World War II Soviet agent whose codename was ALES. On

In Search Of Genghis Khan + 2 Bonus Titles DVD MP4 Download USB

August 25, 1227: #DOTD: Genghis Khan
(also transliterated as Chinggis Khaan), Mongolian emperor,
founder and first Great Khan of the Mongol Empire, which became
the largest contiguous empire in history after his death (b. c.
1162) #dies of uncertain causes while leading the Siege Of Lingwu
in southern China against the Western Xia emperor Xiangzong.
Genghis Khan suffered complications from a fall from his horse
while hunting the prior winter; Rashid al-Din and the Yuan Shi
mention he suffered from an illness - possibly malaria, typhus, or
bubonic plague. Marco Polo attests that he was shot by an arrow
during a siege, while Carpini reports that Genghis was struck by
lightning. Legends sprang up around the event, the most famous
recounts how the beautiful Gurbelchin, formerly wife of the Xia
emperor, castrated Genghis with a concealed dagger during sexual
intercourse. Whatever the cause of his death, the complications of
his fall from his horse slowed the siege's progress, as his sons
and commanders urged him to end the campaign and return to
Mongolia to recover, arguing that the urban-bound Xia would still
be there another year. Incensed by insults from Xia's leading
commander, Genghis insisted that the siege be continued, and it
was while leading this siege that he died. His death was kept a
closely guarded secret, and the Western Xia capital city of
Zhongxing, unaware of his death, fell the following month. The
city was put to the sword and its population was treated with
extreme savagery; the Xia civilisation was essentially
extinguished in what Man described as "very successful
ethnocide". After his death, Genghis was transported back to
Mongolia and buried on or near the sacred Burkhan Khaldun peak in
the Khentii Mountains, on a site he had personally chosen years
before. Specific details of the funeral procession and burial were
not made public knowledge; the mountain, declared ikh khorig (lit.
"Great Taboo"; i.e. prohibited zone), was off-limits to
all but its Uriankhai guard. When Ogedei acceded to the throne in
1229, the grave was honoured with three days of offerings and the
sacrifice of thirty maidens. Ratchnevsky theorises that the
Mongols, who had no knowledge of embalming techniques, may have
buried the khan in the Ordos to avoid his body decomposing in the
summer heat; Atwood emphatically rejects this hypothesis. Genghis
Khan was born Temujin Borjigin in the Khentii Mountains of North
Eastern Mongolia. Genghis Khan came to power by uniting many of
the nomadic tribes of Northeast Asia. After founding the Empire
and being proclaimed "Genghis Khan", he launched the
Mongol invasions that conquered most of Eurasia. Campaigns
initiated in his lifetime include those against the Qara Khitai,
Caucasus, and Khwarazmian, Western Xia and Jin dynasties. These
campaigns were often accompanied by large-scale massacres of the
civilian populations - especially in the Khwarazmian and Western
Xia controlled lands. By the end of his life, the Mongol Empire
occupied a substantial portion of Central Asia and China. Before
Genghis Khan died he assigned Ogedei Khan as his successor. Later
his grandsons split his empire into khanates. Genghis Khan died in
1227 after defeating the Western Xia. He was buried in an unmarked
grave somewhere in Mongolia. His descendants extended the Mongol
Empire across most of Eurasia by conquering or creating vassal
states in all of modern-day China, Korea, the Caucasus, Central
Asia, and substantial portions of Eastern Europe and Southwest
Asia. Many of these invasions repeated the earlier large-scale
slaughters of local populations. As a result, Genghis Khan and his
empire have a fearsome reputation in local histories. Beyond his
military accomplishments, Genghis Khan also advanced the Mongol
Empire in other ways. He decreed the adoption of the Uyghur script
as the Mongol Empire's writing system. He also practiced
meritocracy and encouraged religious tolerance in the Mongol
Empire, and unified the nomadic tribes of Northeast Asia.
Present-day Mongolians regard him as the founding father of
Mongolia. Although known for the brutality of his campaigns and
considered by many to have been a genocidal ruler, Genghis Khan is
also credited with bringing the Silk Road under one cohesive
political environment. This brought communication and trade from
Northeast Asia into Muslim Southwest Asia and Christian Europe,
thus expanding the horizons of all three cultural areas. On Sale

August 25, 1543 (1542?): Japan: The

(The Muromachi Era [Japanese: Muromachi Jidai) The Higashiyama
Culture (Japanese: Higashiyama Bunka): Nanban Trade (Japanese:
Nanban Boek, "Southern Barbarian Trade"): -- Portuguese
trader and explorer Antonio Mota and his companion Francisco
Zeimoto become the first Europeans to visit Japan, and thereby
unintentionally begin the Japanese firearms industry. The Japanese
found their handheld guns fascinating, and they thereafter mass
produced firearms for several decades afterwards. While traveling
to Ningbo China in a Chinese junk in 1543 (some sources say 1542),
Mota and the rest of the crew were swept off course by a bad
storm. Among the crew were around one hundred East Asians, and the
Portuguese Francisco Zeimoto and Antonio Peixoto (Portuguese
explorer and writer Fernao Mendes Pinto claimed that he was on the
voyage as well, but this claim is unlikely due to the fact that he
also claims he was (more accurately) in Burma at the same time).
Driven by the storm, the ship landed on the island of Tanegashima,
one of the Osumi Islands belonging to Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan
on August 25 of either 1543 or 1542. Antonio Mota and Francisco
Zeimoto are officially the first Europeans on Japanese soil;
Antonio Peixoto is not recorded as having landed, and presumably
died at sea prior to the landing. Their ship was then soon
repaired and Antonio Mota departed from Japan. The rest of his
life is unknown. Though their unintentional introduction of
firearms to Japanese culture was initially embraced, there
developed a cultural aversion to the weapon over time, and the
preeminence of the sword reasserted itself until the Meiji
Restoration. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT!

August 25, 1940: The European Civil War:
World War II: The Second European War (The European Theater Of
World War II): The Western Front Of World War II: Aviation:
Military Aviation: Air Warfare Of World War II: Strategic Bombing
During World War II: European Air Operations During The Battle Of
Europe: The Bombing Of Berlin In World War II: -- The first
Bombing of Berlin by the British Royal Air Force occurs during a
night time raid. 95 aircraft were dispatched to bomb Tempelhof
Airport near the center of Berlin and Siemensstadt, of which 81
dropped their bombs in and around Berlin, and while the damage was
slight, the psychological effect on Hitler was greater. The
bombing raids on Berlin prompted Hitler to order the shift of the
Luftwaffe's target from British airfields and air defenses to
British cities, at a time during the Battle Of Britain when the
British air defenses were becoming exhausted and overstretched. In
the following two weeks there were a further five raids of a
similar size, all nominally precision raids at specific targets,
but with the difficulties of navigating at night the bombs that
were dropped were widely dispersed. Before 1941, Berlin, at 950
kilometres (590 miles) from London, was at the extreme range
attainable by the British bombers then available to the Allied
forces. It could be bombed only at night in summer when the days
were longer and skies clear-which increased the risk to Allied
bombers. Berlin, the capital of Nazi Germany, was subject to 363
air raids during the Second World War. It was bombed by the RAF
Bomber Command between 1940 and 1945, by the USAAF Eighth Air
Force between 1943 and 1945, and the French Air Force between 1944
and 1945 as part of the Allied campaign of strategic bombing of
Germany. It was also attacked by aircraft of the Red Air Force,
especially in 1945 as Soviet forces closed on the city. British
bombers dropped 45,517 tons of bombs; the Americans dropped 23,000
tons. As the bombings continued more and more people moved out. By
May 1945, 1.7 million people (40% of the population) had fled.
When the Second World War began in 1939, the President of the
United States, then a neutral power, Franklin D. Roosevelt, issued
a request to the major belligerents to confine their air raids to
military targets.[4] The French and the British agreed to abide by
the request, with the provision that this was "upon the
understanding that these same rules of warfare will be
scrupulously observed by all of their opponents". The United
Kingdom had a policy of using aerial bombing only against military
targets and against infrastructure such as ports and railways of
direct military importance. While it was acknowledged that the
aerial bombing of Germany would cause civilian casualties, the
British government renounced the deliberate bombing of civilian
property, outside combat zones, as a military tactic. This policy
was abandoned on 15 May 1940, two days after the German air attack
on Rotterdam, when the RAF was given permission to attack targets
in the Ruhr, including oil plants and other civilian industrial
targets that aided the German war effort, such as blast furnaces
that at night were self illuminating. The first RAF raid on the
interior of Germany took place on the night of 10 - 11 May, on
Dortmund. During 1940 there were more raids on Berlin, all of
which did little damage. The raids grew more frequent in 1941, but
were ineffective in hitting important targets. The head of the Air
Staff of the RAF, Sir Charles Portal, justified these raids by
saying that to "get four million people out of bed and into
the shelters" was worth the losses involved. On Sale Until

(August 25-31,1941): -- The Anglo-Soviet Invasion Of Iran, the
neutral Imperial State of Iran by the United Kingdom and the
Soviet Union, beginss with a multi-pronged coordinated invasion
along Iran's borders with the Kingdom of Iraq, Azerbaijan SSR, and
Turkmen SSR. Operation Countenance was largely unopposed by the
numerically and technologically outmatched Iranian forces. The
invasion took place two months after the Axis invasion of the
Soviet Union and the Soviet Union's subsequent alliance with the
United Kingdom. The attack also took place less than two months
after Allied victories over pro-Axis forces in neighbouring Iraq
and French Syria and Lebanon. The invasion's strategic purpose was
to ensure the safety of Allied supply lines to the USSR along The
Persian Corridor, to secure Iranian oil fields, to limit German
influence in Iran (Reza Shah had leveraged Germany to offset the
British and Soviet spheres of influence on Iran) and to preempt a
possible Axis advance from Turkey through Iran toward the Baku oil
fields or British India. The fighting ended on August 31 when
Soviet forces entered Tehran, after Iran the Iranian government
formally agreed to surrender, having already agreed to a ceasefire
on August 30. The two powers then announced that they would stay
until six months after the end of the war with Nazi Germany, which
date turned out to be March 2, 1946. On that date, the British
began to withdraw, but Moscow delayed until May, citing "threats
to Soviet security". Following the invasion, on September 16,

Emperor of the Nguyen dynasty, the last ruling family of Vietnam.
From 1926 to 1945, he was Emperor of Annam, which was then a

of the present-day Vietnam. Bao Dai ascended the throne in 1932.
The Japanese ousted the Vichy French administration in March 1945

War II): The Cold War: The Cold War In Asia: The Murder Of John
Birch: -- #DOTD: #RIP: Ten days after World War II ends with Japan
announcing its surrender, armed supporters of the Chinese
Communist Party kill U.S. Office of Strategic Services (OSS)
officer John Birch, regarded by some of the American right as the
first victim of the Cold War. V-J Day, August 14, 1945, signaled
the end of formal hostilities, but under terms of the Japanese
surrender, the Japanese Army was ordered to continue occupying the
areas it controlled until they could be surrendered to the
Nationalist government, even in places where the Chinese
Communist-led government had been the de facto state for a decade.
This led to continued fighting as the People' Liberation Army
(PLA) sought to expel all Japanese imperial forces, which it
perceived to include U.S. personnel, who were then openly
collaborating with the remaining Japanese forces. On August 25,
when Captain Birch was leading a party of eleven Americans,
Chinese Nationalists, and Koreans on a mission to gather
intelligence in Xuzhou, they were stopped by a PLA force in a
small town where the Communists had been fighting Japanese troops.
Birch refused to surrender his revolver and harsh words and
insults were exchanged. Birch was shot and killed, and a Chinese
Nationalist aide was shot and wounded, but survived. The rest of
the party was taken prisoner, but were released two months later.
The John Birch Society (JBS), founded December 9, 1958, is an
advocacy group named in his honor by Robert H. W. Welch Jr. in
1958, supporting anti-communism and limited government. It has
properly been described as a radical right and far-right
organization. Businessman and founder Robert W. Welch Jr.
(1899-1985) developed an organizational infrastructure in 1958 of
chapters nationwide. After an early rise in membership and
influence, efforts by those such as conservative William F.
Buckley Jr. and National Review led the JBS to be identified as a
fringe element of the conservative movement, mostly in fear of the
radicalization of the American right. More recently Jeet Heer has
argued in The New Republic that while the organization's influence
peaked in the 1970s, "Bircherism" and its legacy of
conspiracy theories has become the dominant strain in the
conservative movement. Politico has asserted that the JBS began
making a resurgence in the mid-2010s, and many political analysts
from across the spectrum have argued that it shaped the modern
conservative movement and especially the Trump administration.
Writing in The Huffington Post, Andrew Reinbach called the JBS
"the intellectual seed bank of the right." Originally
based in Belmont, Massachusetts, it is now headquartered in Grand
Chute, Wisconsin a suburb of Appleton, Wisconsin, with local
chapters throughout the United States. The organization owns
American Opinion Publishing, which publishes the magazine The New
American. The society opposed the 1960s civil rights movement and
claimed the movement had Communists in important positions. In the
latter half of 1965, the JBS produced a flyer titled "What's
Wrong With Civil Rights?" and used the flyer as a newspaper
advertisement. The society opposed the Civil Rights Act Of 1964,
claiming it violated the Tenth Amendment to the United States
Constitution and overstepped individual states' rights to enact
laws regarding civil rights. It successfully opposed the Equal
Rights Amendment in the 1970s, accused the ERA's supporters of
subversion, asserting that the ERA was part of a "Communist"
plot "to reduce human beings to living at the same level as
animals." The society opposes "one world government",
and it has an immigration reduction view on immigration reform; it
opposes the United Nations, the North American Free Trade
Agreement (NAFTA), the Central America Free Trade Agreement
(CAFTA), the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), and other
free trade agreements. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT!

Government Programs: Federal Bureau Of Investigation Operations:
The Aftermath Of World War II: COINTELPRO: -- FBI documents,
released in response to a Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA)
lawsuit, reveals that the FBI and the government mounted an
intensive campaign against civil rights organizations in the
sixties. An FBI letter released to the public in response to a
freedom of information suit describes the government's COINTELPRO
program as having been designed "to expose, disrupt,
misdirect, discredit or otherwise neutralize the activities of
Black nationalists, hate-type groups, their leadership, spokesmen,
membership and supporters, and to counter their propensity for
violence and civil disorders." A later telegram specifically
named the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC,
pronounced "Snik") and the Southern Christian Leadership
Conference (SCLC) as organizations having "radical and
violence prone leaders, members and followers." COINTELPRO
(syllabic abbreviation derived from (Co)unter (Intel)ligence
(Pro)gram, 1956-1971) was a series of covert and illegal projects
by the FBI aimed at surveilling, infiltrating, discrediting, and
disrupting domestic American political organizations. FBI records
show COINTELPRO resources targeted groups and individuals the FBI
deemed subversive, sometimes rightly but sometimes wrongly,
including: 1) feminist organizations, 2) the Communist Party USA,
3) anti-Vietnam War organizers, 4) activists of the civil rights
movement and Black Power movement (e.g. Martin Luther King Jr.,
the Nation of Islam, and the Black Panther Party), 5)

Voyager 2 spacecraft makes its closest approach to Neptune, the
second to last planet in the Solar System at the time. Five hours
after its closest approach to Neptune, it performed a close fly-by
of Triton, the larger of Neptune's two originally known moons,
passing within about 40,000 km (25,000 mi). Through repeated
computerized test simulations of trajectories through the
Neptunian system conducted in advance, flight controllers
determined the best way to route Voyager 2 through the
Neptune-Triton system. Voyager 2 discovered previously unknown
Neptunian rings, and confirmed six new moons: Despina, Galatea,
Larissa, Proteus, Naiad and Thalassa. While in the neighborhood of
Neptune, Voyager 2 discovered the "Great Dark Spot", one
of a series of dark spots on Neptune similar in appearance to
Jupiter's Great Red Spot, which has since disappeared according to
observations by the Hubble Space Telescope. The Great Dark Spot
was later hypothesized to be a region of clear gas, forming a
window in the planet's high-altitude methane cloud deck. With the
decision of the International Astronomical Union to reclassify
Pluto as a dwarf planet in 2006, the flyby of Neptune by Voyager 2
in 1989 retroactively became in the IAU's book the point at which
every known planet in the Solar System had been visited at least
once by a space probe. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT!

man to walk on the moon, died. That Voyager 1 had possibly done so
was not publicly announced until March 2013, and until September
12, 2013, it was still an open question as to whether or not it
had. The determination that Voyager 1 had passed through the
boundary (heliopause) of the heliosphere (the magnetosphere,
astrosphere and outermost atmospheric layer of the Sun) was based
on its having detected a marked change in the plasma environment
on August 25, 2012. Scientists were at first not certain that this
change reflected either Voyager's entering interstellar space or
an unknown region of the Solar System. It took some time before
the determination that Voyager had exited the heliosphere was
officially confirmed. In 2013 Voyager 1 was exiting the Solar

The Mystery Of The Full Moon: Science Psychology Biology Faith MP4

August 25, 1835: Literature: The History
Of Literature: Journalism: The History Of Journalism: The History
Of Print Journalism: Hoaxes: Journalistic Hoaxes: Hoaxes In
Science: The Great Moon Hoax (The Great Moon Hoax Of 1835): -- The
first Great Moon Hoax article is published in The New York Sun,
announcing the discovery of life and civilization on the Moon. The
Great Moon Hoax was a series of six articles published in The (New
York) Sun, beginning on August 25, 1835, about the supposed
discovery of life and civilization on the Moon. The discoveries
were falsely attributed to Sir John Herschel and his fictitious
companion Andrew Grant. The story was advertised on August 21,
1835, as an upcoming feature allegedly reprinted from The
Edinburgh Courant. The first in a series of six was published four
days later on August 25. These articles were never retracted;
however, on September 16, 1835, The Sun admitted the articles were
in fact fabricated. The hoax came at a time when readers looked
for entertainment as much as information from penny press
newspapers, which would later change with the development of
ethical journalism. The headline read: ========= "GREAT
ASTRONOMICAL DISCOVERIES, LATELY MADE BY SIR JOHN HERSCHEL, L.L.D.
F.R.S. & c. At the Cape of Good Hope. [From Supplement to the
Edinburgh Journal of Science.]" ========= The articles
described animals on the Moon, including bison, single-horned
goats, mini zebras, unicorns, bipedal tail-less beavers and
bat-like winged humanoids ("Vespertilio-homo") who built
temples. There were trees, oceans and beaches. These discoveries
were supposedly made with "an immense telescope of an
entirely new principle". The telescope, transported to South
Africa from New England, was said to be many times larger than any
other telescope in the world. The lens measured "24 feet in
diameter and 7 tons in weight". "Vespertilio-homo"
can be translated from Latin as man-bat, bat-man, or man-bats. A
reprinted edition of 1836 added a second type, named the
Vespertiliones. The author of the narrative was ostensibly Dr.
Andrew Grant, the travelling companion and amanuensis of Sir John
Herschel, but Grant was fictitious. Eventually, the authors
announced that the observations had been terminated by the
destruction of the telescope. They reported that the Sun had
caused the lens of the telescope to act as a "burning glass",
setting fire to the observatory. The writer of the article was at
first not known to the public. Authorship has subsequently been
attributed to Richard Adams Locke (1800-1871), a reporter who, in
August 1835, was working for The Sun. Locke publicly admitted to
being the author in 1840, in a letter to the weekly paper New
World. Despite Locke's claims, rumours persisted that others were
involved in the articles' creation. Two other men have been noted
in connection with the hoax: Jean-Nicolas Nicollet, a French
astronomer travelling in America at the time (though he was in
Mississippi, not New York, when the Moon-hoax issues appeared),
and Lewis Gaylord Clark, editor of The Knickerbocker, a literary
magazine. However, there is no good evidence to indicate that
anyone but Locke was the author of the hoax. Assuming that Locke
was the author, his intentions were probably, first, to create a
sensational story which would increase sales of The Sun, and,
second, to ridicule some of the more extravagant astronomical
theories that had recently been published. Locke had meant for the
hoax to act as a satire to show how science can be and is
influenced by the thoughts of religion. For instance, in 1824,
Franz von Paula Gruithuisen, professor of astronomy at the
Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat Munchen, had published a paper
titled "Discovery of Many Distinct Traces of Lunar
Inhabitants, Especially of One of Their Colossal Buildings".
One theory is that this paper is responsible for inspiring the
articles written by Locke. In his paper, Gruithuisen claimed to
have observed various shades of color on the lunar surface, which
he correlated with climate and vegetation zones. He also observed
lines and geometrical shapes, which he felt indicated the
existence of walls, roads, fortifications, and cities. According
to legend, The Sun's circulation increased dramatically because of
the hoax and remained permanently greater than before, thereby
establishing The Sun as a successful paper. It brought the journal
to international fame, and the hoax resembled crime reports that
allowed the readers to play detective, trying to discover the
truth. However, the degree to which the hoax increased the paper's
circulation has certainly been exaggerated in popular accounts of
the event. It was not discovered to be a hoax for several weeks
after its publication and, even then, the newspaper did not issue
a retraction. Herschel was initially amused by the hoax, noting
that his own real observations could never be as exciting. He
later became annoyed when he had to answer questions from people
who believed the hoax was serious. Edgar Allan Poe claimed the
story was a plagiarism of his earlier work "The Unparalleled
Adventure of One Hans Pfaall", published in the Southern
Literary Messenger. (He later published "The Balloon-Hoax"
in the same newspaper.) The story was reprinted in the New York
Transcript on September 2-5, 1835, under the headline "Lunar
Discoveries, Extraordinary Aerial Voyage by Baron Hans Pfaall".
Poe described a voyage to the Moon in a balloon, in which Pfaall
lives for five years on the Moon with lunarians and sends back a
lunarian to Earth. The Poe Moon hoax was less successful than
Locke's because of the satiric and comical tone of the account. In
1846, Poe would write a biographical sketch of Locke as part of
his series "The Literati of New York City" which
appeared in Godey's Lady's Book. Locke's sensational reports were
not out of place in the context of the mass proliferation of penny
press newspapers such as the New York Sun which received much of
their income from advertisements, a business practice made
sustainable by large numbers of readers. The Sun was a pioneer
when it came to producing shocking and often sensationalist
journalism, being the first New York newspaper to report on
murders, suicides, personal events, and divorces, and it was
because of stories such as these that the Sun thrived in
attracting readers to their articles, and thus to their
advertisements. The success of such sensational stories as the
"Great Moon Hoax" can be partly attributed to the
influence of contemporary speculative science. Figures like the
Reverend Thomas Dick, who claimed that the Moon was inhabited by
billions of beings, had captured the public's imagination in the
early 19th century. Locke's hoax played on similar popular
beliefs, presenting them as the latest scientific findings from
the well-respected astronomer Sir John Herschel, which lent the
story credibility. #GreatMoonHoax #GreatMoonHoaxOf1835 #NewYorkSun

The History Of Rock And Roll (Rock & Roll, Rock-N-Roll, Rock
'N' Roll, Rock 'N Roll, Rock N' Roll): Record Releases: -- Born to
Run, the third studio album by American singer-songwriter Bruce
Springsteen, is released through Columbia Records. Co-produced by
Springsteen with his manager Mike Appel and the producer Jon
Landau, its recording took place in New York. Following the
commercial failures of his first two albums, the album marked
Springsteen's effort to break into the mainstream and create a
commercially successful album. Springsteen sought to emulate Phil
Spector's Wall of Sound production, leading to prolonged sessions
with the E Street Band lasting from January 1974 to July 1975; six
months alone were spent working on the title track. The album
incorporates musical styles including rock and roll, pop rock, R &
B, and folk rock. Its character-driven lyrics describe individuals
who feel trapped and fantasize about escaping to a better life,
conjured via romantic lyrical imagery of highways and travel.
Springsteen envisioned the songs taking place over one long summer
day and night. They are also less tied to the New Jersey area than
his previous work. The album cover, featuring Springsteen leaning
on E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons's shoulder, is
considered iconic and has been imitated by various musicians and
in other media. Supported by an expensive promotional campaign,
Born to Run became a commercial success, reaching number three on
the US Billboard Top LPs & Tape chart and the top ten in three
others. Two singles were released, "Born to Run" and
"Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out", the first of which became a
radio and live favorite. The album's release generated extensive
publicity, leading to backlash from critics who expressed
skepticism over whether Springsteen's newfound attention was
warranted. Following its release, Springsteen became embroiled in
legal issues with Appel, leading him to tour the United States and
Europe for almost two years. Upon release, Born to Run received
highly positive reviews. Critics praised the storytelling and
music, although some viewed its production as excessive and
heavy-handed. Born to Run was Springsteen's breakthrough album.
Its success has been attributed to capturing the ideals of a
generation of American youths during a decade of political
turmoil, war, and issues facing the working class. Over the
following decades, the album has become widely regarded as a
masterpiece and one of Springsteen's best records. It has appeared
on various lists of the greatest albums of all time and was
inducted into the National Recording Registry in 2003 by the
Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically, or
aesthetically significant". Born to Run received an expanded
reissue in 2005 to celebrate its 30th anniversary, featuring a
concert film and a documentary detailing the album's making. On

-- President Harry Truman orders Secretary of the Army Frank Pace
have U.S. Army troops seize control of the nation's railroads to
avert a strike. Truman said that "governmental seizure [of
the railroads] is imperative" to protect American citizens as
well as "essential to the national defense and security of
the nation." Truman acted in anticipation of an imminent
strike by railroad workers, two months after the United Nations,
led by the United States, had intervened in Korea in an ultimately
successful effort to repel an invasion by communist-led North
Korea. The strike plans arose out of more than a year of discord
between unions and rail companies over wage demands and proposed
work-rule changes Truman initially created an emergency board in
hopes that it could fashion a negotiated settlement between the
unions and the owners, forestalling a walkout. However, when the
unions rejected the presidential initiative, Truman felt compelled
to act. Soon after Truman signed an executive order, Frank Pace
Jr., the secretary of the Army, said: "We must not permit the
flow of essential support to the forces in Korea to be
interrupted." Karl Bendetsen, the assistant secretary of the
Army, sent a telegram to the union presidents and rail companies,
asking whether labor and management would work under Army control.
Both sides agreed to do so. In theory, the unions struck; in
practice, the railroads continued to operate under the nominal
military control. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT!

August 25, 1912: China: The History Of
China: The Century Of Humiliation (The Hundred Years Of National

[GMD], The Nationalist Party of China [NPC], The Chinese
Nationalist Party [CNP]): -- The Kuomintang is founded for the
first time in Peking, China at the Huguang Guild Hall in Peking,
where the Tongmenghui and five smaller pro-revolution parties
merged to contest the first national elections. Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, a
proponent of Chinese nationalism and democracy who founded the
Revive China Society at the capital of the Republic of Hawaii,
Honolulu, on November 24, 1894, was chosen as the party chairman,
with Huang Xing, a Chinese revolutionary leader and politician who
ultimately became the first commander-in-chief of the Republic of
China, as his deputy. The KMT traces its ideological and
organizational roots to the work of Sun Yat-Sen. (Sun had joined
forceson on August 20, 1905 with other anti-monarchist societies
in Tokyo, Empire of Japan, to form the Tongmenghui, a group
committed to the overthrow of the Qing dynasty and to establish a
republic in China.) The most influential member of the party was
the third ranking Song Jiaoren, who mobilized mass support from
gentry and merchants for the Nationalists to advocate a
constitutional parliamentary democracy and oppose constitutional
monarchists. Because Sun did not have military power, he had ceded
the provisional presidency of the republic to General Yuan Shikai,
who had arranged for the abdication of Puyi, the last Emperor, on
February 12. The party and sought to check the power of Yuan. The
Nationalists won an overwhelming majority in the first National
Assembly election in December 1912. However, Yuan soon began to
ignore the parliament in making presidential decisions. Song
Jiaoren was assassinated in Shanghai in 1913. Members of the
Nationalists, led by Sun Yat-Sen, suspected that Yuan was behind
the plot and thus staged the Second Revolution in July 1913, a
poorly planned and ill-supported armed rising to overthrow Yuan,
and failed. Yuan, claiming subversiveness and betrayal, expelled
adherents of the KMT from the parliament. Yuan dissolved the
Nationalists, whose members had largely fled into exile in Japan,
in November and dismissed the parliament early in 1914. Yuan
Shikai proclaimed himself emperor in December 1915. While exiled
in Japan in 1914, Sun established the Chinese Revolutionary Party
on 8 July 1914, but many of his old revolutionary comrades,
including Huang Xing, Wang Jingwei, Hu Hanmin and Chen Jiongming,
refused to join him or support his efforts in inciting armed
uprising against Yuan. To join the Revolutionary Party, members
had to take an oath of personal loyalty to Sun, which many old
revolutionaries regarded as undemocratic and contrary to the
spirit of the revolution. As a result, he became largely sidelined
within the Republican movement during this period. Sun returned to
China in 1917 to establish a military junta at Canton to oppose
the Beiyang government but was soon forced out of office and
exiled to Shanghai. There, with renewed support, he resurrected
the KMT on 10 October 1919, under the name Kuomintang of China
(Chinese: Zhongguo Guomindang, "China Nationalist Party"),

August 25, 19 AD: #DOTD: #RIP:
Germanicus, ancient Roman general, known for his campaigns in
Germania (b. May 24, 15 BC) #dies in Antioch, Roman Syria aged 33
under dubious circumstances. While in the eastern provinces, he
came into conflict with the governor of Syria, Gnaeus Calpurnius
Piso. During their feud, Germanicus became ill in Antioch and
died, a death has been attributed to poison by ancient sources,
but that was never proven. Germanicus had made his way to Egypt,
arriving to a tumultuous reception that January. He gone there to
relieve a famine in the country, and their produce was vital to
Rome's food supply. This move upset the Roman Emperor Tiberius,
because it had violated an order by Augustus that no senator
should enter the province without consulting the emperor and the
Senate (Egypt was an imperial province, and thus belonged to the
emperor). Germanicus had entered the province in his capacity as
proconsul, but had done so without first seeking permission from
Tiberius to do so. He returned to Syria by summer, where he found
that Piso had either ignored or revoked his orders to the cities
and legions there. Germanicus in turn ordered Piso's recall to
Rome, although this action was probably beyond his authority. In
the midst of this feud, Germanicus became ill and despite the fact
Piso had removed himself to the port of Seleucia, he was convinced
that Piso was somehow poisoning him. Tacitus reports that there
were signs of black magic in Piso's house with hidden body-parts
and Germanicus's name inscribed on lead tablets. Germanicus sent
Piso a letter formally renouncing their friendship (amicitia);
Germanicus died soon thereafter. His death aroused much
speculation, with several sources blaming Piso, acting under
orders from Emperor Tiberius. As the death of Germanicus occurred
during their feud most people suspected him of having poisoned
Germanicus, although this was never proven. The armed attempt by
Piso to regain control of Syria immediately after the death of
Germanicus only aroused more indignation. This, the rumors of him
poisoning Germanicus, and his conduct going back as far as his
governorship of Spain were all taken up by the delatores in their
accusations against him. It wasn't long before the matter was
taken to the Emperor. Tiberius was forced to order an
investigation, and after briefly hearing both sides, decided to
defer the case to the senate. Tiberius made no effort to conceal
his sentiments: the Pisones were longtime supporters of the
Claudians, with their support going back to the early days of
Octavian. A public trial was held, and Tiberius made allowances
for Piso to summon witnesses of all social orders, including
slaves, and he was given more time to plea than the prosecution,
but it made no difference: before the sentencing, Piso had
committed suicide, though Tacitus supposes that Tiberius may have
had him murdered, fearing his own implication in Germanicus'
death, and stated that Tiberius was involved in a conspiracy
against Germanicus, and that Tiberius's jealousy and fear of his
nephew's popularity and increasing power was the true motive. The
death of Germanicus in dubious circumstances greatly affected
Tiberius's popularity in Rome, leading to the creation of a
climate of fear in Rome itself. Also suspected of connivance in
his death was Tiberius's chief advisor, Sejanus, who would, in the
20s, create an atmosphere of fear in Roman noble and
administrative circles by the use of treason trials and the role
of delatores, or informers. Germanicus is buried in The Mausoleum
Of Augustus, Rome, Citta Metropolitana Di Roma Capitale, Lazio,
Italy. Germanicus was born Germanicus Julius Caesar in Rome,
Italy, the son of Nero Claudius Drusus and Antonia the Younger,
into an influential branch of the patrician gens Claudia.
Germanicus's praenomen (personal name) is unknown, but he was
probably named Nero Claudius Drusus after his father
(conventionally called "Drusus"), or possibly Tiberius
Claudius Nero after his uncle. He took the agnomen (nickname)
"Germanicus", awarded posthumously to his father in
honor of his victories in Germania, at which point he nominally
became head of the family in 9 BC. In AD 4, he was adopted by his
paternal uncle Tiberius, who succeeded Augustus as Roman emperor a
decade later. As a result, Germanicus became an official member of
the gens Julia, another prominent family, to which he was related
on his mother's side. His connection to the Julii was further
consolidated through a marriage between himself and Agrippina the
Elder, a granddaughter of Augustus. He was also the father of
Caligula, the maternal grandfather of Nero, and the older brother
of Claudius. During the reign of Augustus, Germanicus enjoyed an
accelerated political career as the heir of the emperor's heir,
entering the office of quaestor five years before the legal age in
AD 7. He held that office until AD 11, and was elected consul for
the first time in AD 12. The year after, he was made proconsul of
Germania Inferior, Germania Superior, and all of Gaul. From there
he commanded eight legions, about one-third of the entire Roman
army, which he led against the Germanic tribes in his campaigns
from AD 14 to 16. He avenged the Roman Empire's defeat in the
Teutoburg Forest and retrieved two of the three legionary eagles
that had been lost during the battle. In AD 17, he returned to
Rome, where he received a triumph before leaving to reorganise the
provinces of Asia Minor, whereby he incorporated the provinces of
Cappadocia and Commagene in AD 18. As a famous general, Germanicus
was widely popular and regarded as the ideal Roman long after his
death. To the Roman people, Germanicus was the Roman equivalent of
Alexander The Great due to the nature of his death at a young age,
his virtuous character, his dashing physique, and his military
renown. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT!

Rennie, British film, television and stage actor (d. June 10,
1971) is #born Eric Alexander Rennie in Idle near Bradford, West
Riding of Yorkshire, the second son of a Scottish wool mill owner,
James Rennie, and his English wife Amelia (nee Dobby). He is
perhaps best remembered for his starring role as the space visitor
Klaatu in the science fiction film The Day the Earth Stood Still
(1951), the first postwar, large-budget, "A"
science-fiction film, in which Rennie received top billing after
Claude Rains turned down the role. It was a serious, high-minded
exploration of mid-20th century suspicion and paranoia, combined
with a philosophical overview of humanity's coming place in the
larger universe. Rennie said director Robert Wise told him to do
the role "with dignity but not with superiority". The
story was later dramatised in 1954 on Lux Radio Theatre, with
Rennie and Billy Gray recreating their original film roles. Seven
years later, on 3 March 1962, when The Day the Earth Stood Still
made its television premiere on NBC's NBC Saturday Night at the
Movies, Rennie appeared in a two-minute introductory prologue
before the start of the film. In a career spanning more than 30
years, Rennie appeared in more than 50 films, including Secret
Agent (1936), Dangerous Moonlight aka Suicide Squadron (1941),

August 25, 1767: #BOTD: Louis Antoine
Leon de Saint-Just, military and political leader during the
French Revolution (d. July 28, 1794) is #born in Decize in the
former Nivernais province of central France. The youngest of the
deputies elected to the National Convention in 1792, Saint-Just
rose quickly in their ranks and became a major leader of the
government of the French First Republic. He spearheaded the
movement to execute King Louis XVI and later drafted the radical
French Constitution of 1793. He became a close friend of
Maximilien Robespierre, and served with him as one of the
commissioners of the Committee of Public Safety. Dispatched as a
commissar to the army during its rocky start in the French
Revolutionary Wars, Saint-Just imposed severe discipline, and he
was credited by many for the army's subsequent revival at the
front. Back in Paris, he supervised the consolidation of
Robespierre's power through a ruthless and bloody program of
intimidation. In his relatively brief time on the historical
stage, he became the enduring public face of The Reign Of Terror
and was dubbed the "Angel of Death" by later writers.
Saint-Just organized the arrests and prosecutions of many of the
most famous figures of the Revolution. Saint-Just was arrested in
the violent episode of 9 Thermidor and executed executed by
guillotine in Paris, France the next day along with Robespierre
and their allies. In many histories of the Revolution, their
deaths at the guillotine mark the end of The Reign Of Terror. He
is buried in a mass grave with other executed dissidents in the
then newly created Errancis cemetery in the 8th arrondissement of
Paris, one of the cemeteries (the others being Madeleine Cemetery,
Picpus Cemetery, Chapelle expiatoire and the Cemetery of Saint
Margaret) used to dispose of the corpses of guillotine victims

1812: The Burning Of Washington: -- On the second day of the
Burning of Washington, British troops torch The Library Of
Congress, United States Treasury, Department Of War, and other
public buildings. During The War Of 1812, Washington D.C. was
invaded by British forces that burned the Capitol, the White House
and most other public buildings along with a number of private
homes. The burning was in retaliation for the earlier American
burning of York (Toronto). After defeating the Americans at the
Battle of Bladensburg, a British force led by Major General Robert
Ross burned down buildings including the White House (known as the
Presidential Mansion), and the Capitol, as well as other
facilities of the U.S. government. The attack was in part a
retaliation for the 14-16 May 1814 American Raid On Port Dover in
Upper Canada, and before that, for the 28-30 April 1913 Burning Of
York, the destruction the American victorry at The Battle Of York
of the Parliament buildings and other public buildings in York,
the predecessor to the old city of Toronto (1834-1998) and the
provincial capital of Upper Canada. Throughout the history of the
United States, the United Kingdom is the only country to have ever
captured Washington, D.C.; the Burning of Washington also marks
the only time since the American Revolutionary War that a foreign
power has captured and occupied the United States capital.
President James Madison, military officials, and his government
fled the city in the wake of the British victory at the Battle of
Bladensburg. They eventually found refuge for the night in
Brookeville, a small town in Montgomery County, Maryland, which is
known today as the "United States Capital for a Day".
President Madison spent the night in the house of Caleb Bentley, a
Quaker who lived and worked in Brookeville. Bentley's house, known
today as the Madison House, still stands in Brookeville. Less than
a day after the attack began, a sudden, very heavy
thunderstorm-possibly a hurricane-put out the fires. It also spun
off a tornado that passed through the center of the capital,
setting down on Constitution Avenue and lifting two cannons before
dropping them several yards away, killing British troops and
American civilians alike. Following the storm, the British
returned to their ships, many of which were badly damaged. The
occupation of Washington lasted only about 26 hours. After the
"Storm that saved Washington", as it soon came to be
called, the Americans returned to the city. On Sale Until Midnight

The Yellowstone Fires Of 1988 Documentary DVD, Download, USB Drive
August 25, 1988: Natural Disasters:
Natural Disasters In The United States: Fires: Conflagrations:
Conflagrations In The United States: Wildfires (Forest Fires,
Bushfires, Brushfires, Wildland Fires, Rural Fires): The
Yellowstone Fires Of 1988: The North Fork Fire: -- The largest
fire in Yellowstone National Park, The North Fork Fire, continues
its eastward advance along the Yellowstone Plateau and reaches the
visitor facilities at Lewis River Canyon, where land management
agencies and the U.S. military put forth enormous efforts to
protect structures. The eastern flank of the fire calmed down for
several days, then down-sloping winds off the Yellowstone Plateau
forced flames along the west side of the fire towards the town of
West Yellowstone, Montana. There, private citizens assisted
assigned personnel in soaking hundreds of acres of forestland to
protect both the town and an electrical power substation. The fire
burned a substantial section of forest along the Madison River
valley. The Yellowstone Fires Of 1988 collectively formed the
largest wildfire in the recorded history of Yellowstone National
Park in the United States. Starting as many smaller individual
fires, the flames quickly spread out of control due to drought
conditions and increasing winds, combining into one large
conflagration which burned for several months. The fires almost
destroyed two major visitor destinations and, on September 8,
1988, the entire park closed to all non-emergency personnel for
the first time in its history. Only the arrival of cool and moist
weather in the late autumn brought the fires to an end. A total of
793,880 acres (3,213 km2), or 36 percent of the park, was affected
by the wildfires. Thousands of firefighters fought the fires,
assisted by dozens of helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft which
were used for water and fire retardant drops. At the peak of the
effort, more than 9,000 firefighters were assigned to the park.
With fires raging throughout the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and
other areas in the western United States, the staffing levels of
the National Park Service and other land management agencies were
inadequate for the situation; more than 4,000 U.S. military
personnel were soon brought in to assist in wildfire suppression
efforts. The firefighting effort cost 120M USD (260M USD in 2020).
Losses to structures were minimized by concentrating firefighting
efforts near major visitor areas, keeping property damage down to
3M USD (6M USD as of 2020). No firefighters died while fighting
the Yellowstone fires, though there were two fire-related deaths
outside the park. Before the late 1960s, fires were generally
believed to be detrimental for parks and forests, and management
policies were aimed at suppressing fires as quickly as possible.
However, as the beneficial ecological role of fire became better
understood in the decades before 1988, a policy was adopted of
allowing natural fires to burn under controlled conditions, which
proved highly successful in reducing the area lost annually to
wildfires. In contrast, in 1988, Yellowstone was overdue for a
large fire, and, in the exceptionally dry summer, many smaller
"controlled" fires combined. The fires burned
discontinuously, leaping from one patch to another, leaving
intervening areas untouched. Intense fires swept through some
regions, burning everything in their paths. Tens of millions of
trees and countless plants were killed by the wildfires, and some
regions were left looking blackened and dead. However, more than
half of the affected areas were burned by ground fires, which did
less damage to hardier tree species. Not long after the fires
ended, plant and tree species quickly reestablished themselves,
and native plant regeneration has been highly successful. The
Yellowstone Fires Of 1988 were unprecedented in the history of the
National Park Service, and led to many questions about existing
fire management policies. Media accounts of mismanagement were
often sensational and inaccurate, sometimes wrongly reporting or
implying that most of the park was being destroyed. While there
were temporary declines in air quality during the fires, no
adverse long-term health effects have been recorded in the
ecosystem and, contrary to initial reports, few large mammals were
killed by the fires, though there was a subsequent reduction in
the number of moose which has yet to rebound. On Sale Until

August 25, 1939: The European Civil War:
World War II: The Second European War (The European Theater Of
World War II): The Anglo-Polish Military Alliance: -- The United
Kingdom and Poland form a military alliance in which the UK
promises to defend Poland in case of invasion by a foreign power
as a guarantee against Germany's imminent Invasion Of Poland. The
alliance committed Britain, for the first time in history, to
fight on behalf of a European country other than France or
Belgium. On March 31, 1939, in response to Nazi Germany's defiance
of the Munich Agreement and occupation of Czechoslovakia, British
Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain pledged during a speech in the
House Of Commons the support of the United Kingdom and France to
assure Polish independence: "... in the event of any action
which clearly threatened Polish independence, and which the Polish
Government accordingly considered it vital to resist with their
national forces, His Majesty's Government would feel themselves
bound at once to lend the Polish Government all support in their
power. They have given the Polish Government an assurance to this
effect. I may add that the French Government have authorized me to
make it plain that they stand in the same position in this matter
as do His Majesty's Government. On 6 April, during a visit to
London by the Polish foreign minister, it was agreed to formalise
the assurance as an Anglo-Polish military alliance, pending
negotiations." On 25 August, two days after the
Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, the Agreement of Mutual Assistance
between the United Kingdom and Poland was signed. The agreement
contained promises of mutual military assistance between the
nations in the event either was attacked by some "European
country". The United Kingdom, sensing a trend of German
expansionism, sought to discourage German aggression by this show
of solidarity. In a secret protocol of the pact, the United
Kingdom offered assistance in the case of an attack on Poland
specifically by Germany, while in the case of attack by other
countries the parties were required to "consult together on
measures to be taken in common". Both the United Kingdom and
Poland were bound not to enter agreements with any other third
countries which were a threat to the other. Because of the pact's
signing, Hitler postponed his planned Invasion Of Poland from 26
August until 1 September. At the time Adolf Hitler was demanding
the cession of the Free City of Danzig, an extraterritorial
highway (the Reichsautobahn Berlin-Koenigsberg) across the Polish
Corridor, and special privileges for the ethnic German minority
within Poland. By the terms of the military alliance, each party
(i.e. Poland and Britain) was free to decide whether to oppose
with force any territorial encroachment, as the pact did not
include any statement of either party's commitment to the defence
of the other party's territorial integrity.] The Pact did contain
provisions regarding "indirect threats" and attempts to
undermine either party's independence by means of "economic
penetration", a clear reference to the peculiar status of
Danzig. Fearing all-out German invasion no matter what, Poland
rejected the German demands. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT!

slow-moving ships carrying 1,411 Japanese soldiers to Guadalcanal;
it is turned back by an Allied air attack, when at 08:05, 18 U.S.
aircraft from Henderson Field on Guadalcanal attacked Tanaka's
convoy, causing heavy damage to Jintsu, killing 24 crewmen, and
knocking Tanaka unconscious. The troop transport Kinryu Maru was
also hit and eventually sank. Just as the destroyer Mutsuki pulled
alongside Kinryu Maru to rescue her crew and embarked troops, she
was attacked by four U.S. B-17s from Espiritu Santo which landed
five bombs on or around Mutsuki, sinking her immediately. An
uninjured but shaken Tanaka transferred to the destroyer Kagero,
sent Jintsu back to Truk, and took the convoy to the Japanese base
in the Shortland Islands. The naval Battle Of The Eastern
Solomons, also known as the Battle of the Stewart Islands and, in
Japanese sources, as the Second Battle of the Solomon Sea, was the
third carrier battle of the Pacific campaign of World War II and
the second major engagement fought between the United States Navy

The Occult History Of The Third Reich DVD, Video Download, USB

August 25, 1845: #BOTD: #HBD! Ludwig II
of Bavaria, King of Bavaria from 1864 until his death in 1886, who
also held the titles of Count Palatine of the Rhine, Duke of
Bavaria, Duke of Franconia, and Duke in Swabia, sometimes called
the Swan King, Mad King Ludwig or der Marchenkoenig ("the
Fairy Tale King") (d. June 13, 1886) is #born Ludwig Otto
Friedrich Wilhelm Wittelsbach in Nymphenburg Palace, Munich,
Bavaria, German Confederation. He succeeded to the throne aged 18.
Two years later Bavaria and Austria fought a war against Prussia,
which they lost. However, in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870
Bavaria sided with Prussia against France, and after the Prussian
victory it became part of the new German Empire led by Prussia.
Though Bavaria retained a degree of autonomy on some matters
within the new German Reich, Ludwig increasingly withdrew from
day-to-day affairs of state in favour of extravagant artistic and
architectural projects. He commissioned the construction of two
lavish palaces and Neuschwanstein Castle, and he was a devoted
patron of the composer Richard Wagner. Ludwig spent all his royal
revenues (although not state funds) on these projects, borrowed
extensively, and defied all attempts by his ministers to restrain
him. This extravagance was used against him to declare him insane,
an accusation which has since come under scrutiny. Today, his
architectural and artistic legacy includes many of Bavaria's most
important tourist attractions. Ludwig II died aged 40 in Lake
Starnberg, Bavaria, German Empire under mysterious circumstances.
That afternoon, Gudden accompanied by the chief of the Munich
Asylum Bernhard von Gudden, went on a stroll in the grounds of
Berg Castle. They were escorted by two attendants. On their
return, Gudden expressed optimism to other doctors concerning the
treatment of his royal patient. Following dinner, at around 6 pm,
Ludwig asked Gudden to accompany him on a further walk, this time
through the Schloss Berg parkland along the shore of Lake
Starnberg. Gudden agreed; the walk may even have been his
suggestion, and he told the aides not to join them. His words were
ambiguous (Es darf kein Pfleger mitgehen, "No attendant may
walk with [us]"). Whether they were meant to follow at a
discreet distance is not clear. The two men were last seen at
about 6:30 pm; they were due back at 8 pm but never returned.
After searches were made for more than two hours by the entire
castle staff in a gale with heavy rain, at 10:30 pm that night,
the bodies of both Ludwig and Gudden were found, head and
shoulders above the shallow water near the shore. Ludwig's watch
had stopped at 6:54. Gendarmes patrolling the park had neither
seen nor heard anything unusual. Ludwig's death was officially
ruled a suicide by drowning, despite the fact that the official
autopsy report indicated that no water was found in his lungs.
Ludwig was a very strong swimmer in his youth, the water was
approximately waist deep where his body was found, and he had not
expressed suicidal feelings during the crisis. Gudden's body
showed blows to the head and neck and signs of strangulation,
leading to the suspicion that he was strangled, although no other
evidence was found to prove this. Another theory suggests that
Ludwig died of natural causes, such as a heart attack or stroke,
brought on by the cool water (12 _C) of the lake during an escape
attempt. Speculation exists that Ludwig was murdered by his
enemies while attempting to escape from Berg. One account suggests
that Ludwig was shot. His personal fisherman, Jakob Lidl
(1864-1933), stated, "Three years after the king's death I
was made to swear an oath that I would never say certain things -
not to my wife, not on my deathbed, and not to any priest _ The
state has undertaken to look after my family if anything should
happen to me in either peacetime or war." Lidl kept his oath,
at least orally, but left behind notes that were found after his
death. According to Lidl, he had hidden behind bushes with his
boat, waiting to meet Ludwig, to row him out into the lake, where
loyalists were waiting to help him escape. Lidl wrote, "As
the king stepped up to his boat and put one foot in it, a shot
rang out from the bank, apparently killing him on the spot, for
the king fell across the bow of the boat." The autopsy report
indicates no scars or wounds were found on the body of the dead
king. Many years later, Countess Josephine von Wrbna-Kaunitz would
show her afternoon tea guests a grey Loden coat with two bullet
holes in the back, asserting it was the one Ludwig was wearing.
Ludwig's remains were dressed in the regalia of the Order of Saint
Hubert, and lay in state in the royal chapel at the Munich
Residenz. In his right hand, he held a posy of white jasmine
picked for him by his cousin the Empress Elisabeth of Austria.
After an elaborate funeral on June 19 1886, Ludwig's remains were
interred in the crypt of St. Michael's Church, Munich. His heart
does not lie with the rest of his body. Bavarian tradition called
for the heart of the king to be placed in a silver urn and sent to
Shrine of Our Lady of Altotting, where it was placed beside those
of his father and grandfather. Three years after his death, a
small memorial chapel was built overlooking the site and a cross
was erected in the lake. A remembrance ceremony is held in
Altotting each year on June 13. Ludwig was succeeded by his
brother Otto. Since Otto was considered incapacitated by mental
illness due to a diagnosis by Gudden and had been under medical
supervision since 1883; the king's uncle Luitpold remained regent.
Luitpold maintained the regency until his own death in 1912 at the
age of 91. He was succeeded as regent by his eldest son, also
named Ludwig. The regency lasted for 13 more months until November
1913, when Regent Ludwig deposed the still-living but
still-institutionalized King Otto, and declared himself King
Ludwig III of Bavaria. His reign lasted until the end of World War
I, when monarchy in all of Germany came to an end. Ludwig II is
buried at Saint Michael's Church in Altstadt, Stadtkreis Munchen,

title was used by all his successors. (d. March 28, 1584) is #born
Ivan Vasilyevich Rurik of the Russian royal house of The
Riurikids, also known as The Volodimerovichi, founded by the
semi-legendary Varangian chieftain of the Rus' known as Prince
Rurik, who according to tradition established himself in Novgorod
around the year AD 862. During his reign, Russia conquered the
Khanates of Kazan, Astrakhan and Sibir. He exercised autocratic
control over Russia' hereditary nobility and developed a
bureaucracy to administer the new territories. He transformed
Russia from a medieval state into an empire, though at immense
cost to its people, and its broader, long-term economy. Historic
sources present disparate accounts of Ivan' complex personality:
he was described as intelligent and devout, yet given to rages and
prone to episodic outbreaks of mental instability. In one such
outburst, he killed his son and heir Ivan Ivanovich. Ivan was an
able diplomat, a patron of arts and trade, and founder of the
Moscow Print Yard, Russia' first publishing house. He was popular
among Russia' commoners and he is noted for his paranoia and harsh
treatment of the Russian nobility. He died in Moscow of a stroke
while playing chess with Bogdan Belsky, aged 53. He is buried at

August 25, 1967: #DOTD: George Lincoln
Rockwell, American sailor and politician, neo-Nazi activist who
founded the American Nazi Party (The National Socialist White
Peoples Party [NSWPP]) in 1959 and became the self-styled leader
of neo-Nazism in the United States and beliefs, strategies, and
writings have continued to influence many white supremacists and
neo-Nazis (b. March 9, 1918) #dies by assassination when he was
shot and killed only a few yards from where he lived in Arlington,
Virginia by John Patler, a former party member who had just been
expelled by Rockwell for "Bolshevik leanings" evinced by
his attempts to inject Marxist ideas into party publications.
Patler was convicted of the murder in December 1967, and sentenced
to 20 years in prison. Patler spent eight years in prison before
being paroled. After a parole violation, he spent another six
years in prison. Matthias Koehl, the second in command at NSWPP,
moved to establish control over Rockwell's body and the assets of
the NSWPP, which at the time had some 300 active members and 3,000
financial supporters. Rockwell's parents wanted a private burial
in Maine, but declined to fight with the Nazis. On August 27, an
NSWPP spokesman reported that federal officials had approved a
military burial at Culpeper National Cemetery in Culpeper,
Virginia, Rockwell being an honorably discharged veteran. The
cemetery specified that no Nazi insignia could be displayed, and
when the 50 mourners violated these conditions, the entrance to
the cemetery was blocked in a five-hour standoff, during which the
hearse, which had been stopped on railroad tracks near the
cemetery, was nearly struck by an approaching train. The next day,
Rockwell's body was secretly cremated, and his ashes are retained
in a rectangular miniature monument-like stone receptacle held by
the NSWPP. George Lincoln Rockwell was born in Bloomington,
Illinois, the first of three children of vaudeville comedians and
actors George Lovejoy Rockwell and Claire (Schade) Rockwell. His
father was born in Providence, Rhode Island, and was of English
and Scottish ancestry. His mother was the daughter of Augustus
Schade, a German immigrant, and Corrine Boudreau, who was of
Acadian French ancestry. Both parents were. His parents divorced
when Rockwell was six years old, and for the rest of his youth he
divided his time between his mother in Atlantic City, New Jersey,
and his father in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. Rockwell briefly studied
philosophy at Brown University before dropping out to join the
Navy. He trained as a pilot and served in World War II and the
Korean War in non-combat roles, achieving the rank of Commander.
Rockwell's politics grew more radical and vocal in the 1950s, and
he was honorably discharged due to his views in 1960. In politics,
he regularly praised Adolf Hitler, referring to him as the "White
Savior of the twentieth century". He denied the Holocaust and
believed that Martin Luther King Jr. was a tool for Jewish
communists desiring to rule the white community. He blamed the
civil rights movement on Jews, and viewed most of them as
traitors. He viewed black people as a primitive, lethargic race
who desired only simple pleasures and a life of irresponsibility,
and supported the resettlement of all African Americans in a new
African state to be funded by the U.S. government. As a supporter
of racial segregation and white separatism, he agreed with and
quoted many leaders of the Black separatism movement such as
Elijah Muhammad and early Malcolm X. In his later years, Rockwell
became increasingly aligned with other neo-Nazi groups, leading
the World Union of National Socialists. On Sale Until Midnight

Warsaw, which began on August 12 with the Polish army, led by
Jozef Pilsudski, on the verge of defeat, ends with the Red Army,
led by Mikhail Tukhachevsky, being decisively defeated. The Battle
Of Warsaw was fought as Red Army forces commanded by Mikhail
Tukhachevsky approached the Polish capital of Warsaw and the
nearby Modlin Fortress. On August 16, Polish forces commanded by
Jozef Pilsudski counterattacked from the south, disrupting the
enemy's offensive, forcing the Russian forces into a disorganized
withdrawal eastward and behind the Neman River. Estimated Russian
losses were 10,000 killed, 500 missing, 30,000 wounded, and 66,000
taken prisoner, compared with Polish losses of some 4,500 killed,
10,000 missing, and 22,000 wounded. The defeat crippled the Red
Army; Vladimir Lenin, the Bolshevik leader, called it "an
enormous defeat" for his forces. In the following months,
several more Polish follow-up victories secured Poland's
independence and led to a peace treaty with Soviet Russia and
Soviet Ukraine later that year, securing the Polish state's
eastern frontiers until 1939. The politician and diplomat Edgar
Vincent regards this event as one of the most important battles in
history on his expanded list of most decisive battles, since the
Polish victory over the Soviets halted the spread of communism
further westwards into Europe. A Soviet victory, which would have
led to the creation of a pro-Soviet Communist Poland, would have
put the Soviets directly on the eastern border of Germany, where
considerable revolutionary ferment was present at the time. On

KTLA: The First 35 Years: Los Angeles TV Station Channel 5 DVD MP4

August 25, 1931: #BOTD: #HBD! Hal
Fishman, television news anchor and journalist (d. August 7, 2007)
is #born Harold Fishman in Brooklyn, New York City. Hal Fishman
was a local news anchor in the Los Angeles area, serving on-air
with Los Angeles-area television stations continuously from 1960
until his death in 2007. Fishman was the longest-running news
anchor in the history of American television before Dave Ward
surpassed him in 2015. He was also a record-holding aviator. "The
Simpsons" cartoon television anchorman Kent Brockman was
partially inspired by Hal Fishman. A Brooklyn, New York native,
Fishman received a bachelor's degree from Cornell University where
he worked at the campus radio station. He also received a master's
degree in political science from UCLA in 1956. Planning for a
career in academia, he served as an assistant professor of
political science at California State University, Los Angeles for
two years. Eventually, Los Angeles independent television station
KCOP approached Fishman to teach an on-air course, and later, the
station invited him to anchor his own segment. Fishman had been on
the air continuously since June 20, 1960, moving from KCOP to KTLA
in 1965. That year, he received significant exposure as a field
reporter for KTLA when he helped cover the Watts Riots live from
the Los Angeles Police Department command center. Fishman also
worked at KTTV and KHJ-TV (now KCAL-TV) during the early 1970s,
returning to KTLA on January 8, 1975, to anchor their evening new
broadcast NewsWatch, later renamed News at Ten. As a news anchor,
Fishman covered numerous events in Los Angeles and the world,
ranging from the assassination of presidential candidate Robert F.
Kennedy, to the Sylmar and Northridge earthquakes, to Pope John
Paul II's 1987 visit to southern California. He, along with KTLA,
was credited for being the first to air footage of the police
beating of Rodney King in 1991, an event that sparked riots a year
later when the officers were acquitted. In 2000, KTLA dedicated
its newsroom in Fishman's honor, commemorating his 40 years in
television and his years of service and commitment to the region.
Fishman won myriad awards, including the Associated Press
Television-Radio Association's first-ever Lifetime Achievement
Award. He received a "star" on the Hollywood "Walk
of Fame," at 1560 Vine Street and KTLA named its television
news studio after Fishman. He also authored two novels, Flight 902
Is Down (co-authored with aviation writer Barry J. Schiff) and The
Vatican Target. Fishman was also an accomplished pilot and set 13
records for speed and altitude. In 1969, he was awarded the Louis
Bleriot medal by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale. Hal
Fishman's last broadcast was on July 30, 2007, eight days before
his death. On July 31, 2007, the night before Fishman became ill
and after his last broadcast, KTLA celebrated his 47 years in
television with a special gala at the Autry National Museum in Los
Angeles. The event was emceed by Morning Show anchor Michaela
Pereira and attended by such dignitaries as Los Angeles mayor
Antonio Villaraigosa and Los Angeles County sheriff Lee Baca.
During the gala, Fishman spoke to the audience about his time in
television. He appeared somewhat fatigued but little would be
known about his condition until the day after. Fishman died at
home, 18 days before he would have turned 76, following recent
treatment for a liver infection, which had detected cancer in his
liver and colon. That morning, the station interrupted its regular
news schedule and dedicated much of the Morning Show and Prime
News broadcasts to Fishman. The reporters on Prime News did not
break for commercials that evening. His remains were cremated, and
the ashes scattered over the skies of Los Angeles, California. On

August 25, 1918: #BOTD: #HBD! Leonard
Bernstein, American composer, conductor, pianist, music educator,
author, and lifelong humanitarian (d. October 14, 1990) is #born
into a Jewish family in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He was one of the
most significant American cultural personalities of the 20th
century. According to music critic Donal Henahan, he was "one
of the most prodigiously talented and successful musicians in
American history". On November 14, 1943, having recently been
appointed assistant conductor to Artur Rodzinski of the New York
Philharmonic, Bernstein made his major conducting debut at short
notice - and without any rehearsal - after guest conductor Bruno
Walter came down with the flu. The program included works by
Schumann, Miklos Rozsa, Wagner and Richard Strauss's Don Quixote
with cello soloist Joseph Schuster. The next day, The New York
Times carried the story on its front page and remarked in an
editorial, "It's a good American success story. The warm,
friendly triumph of it filled Carnegie Hall and spread far over
the air waves." He became instantly famous because the
concert was nationally broadcast on CBS Radio and began appearing
as a guest conductor with many orchestras in the United States and
Canada. As a composer he wrote in many styles, including symphonic
and orchestral music, ballet, film and theatre music, choral
works, opera, chamber music and works for the piano. His
best-known work is the Broadway musical West Side Story, which
continues to be regularly performed worldwide, and was made into
an Academy Award-winning feature film. His works include three
symphonies, Chichester Psalms, Serenade after Plato's "Symposium",
the original score for the film On the Waterfront, and theater
works including On the Town, Wonderful Town, Candide, and his
MASS. Bernstein was the first American-born conductor to lead an
American orchestra. He was music director of the New York
Philharmonic and conducted the world's major orchestras,
generating a significant legacy of audio and video recordings. He
was also a critical figure in the modern revival of the music of
Gustav Mahler, a composer in whose music he was most passionately
interested. A skilled pianist, he often conducted piano concertos
from the keyboard. Bernstein was the first conductor to share and
explore music on television with a mass audience. Through dozens
of national and international broadcasts, including the Emmy
Award-winning Young People's Concerts with the New York
Philharmonic, he made even the most rigorous elements of classical
music an adventure in which everyone could join. Through his
educational efforts, including several books and the creation of
two major international music festivals, he influenced several
generations of young musicians. A lifelong humanitarian, Bernstein
worked in support of Civil Rights; protested the Vietnam War;
advocated for nuclear disarmament; raised money for HIV/AIDS
research and awareness; and engaged in multiple international
initiatives for human rights and world peace. Near the end of his
life, he conducted a historic performance of Beethoven's Symphony
No. 9 in Berlin to celebrate the Fall of the Berlin Wall. The
concert was televised live, worldwide, on Christmas Day, 1989.
Bernstein announced his retirement from conducting on October 9,
1990. He died five days later at the age of 72, in his New York
apartment at The Dakota, of a heart attack brought on by
mesothelioma. A longtime heavy smoker, Bernstein had emphysema
from his mid-50s. On the day of his funeral procession through the
streets of Manhattan, construction workers removed their hats and
waved, calling out "Goodbye, Lenny". Bernstein is buried
near the summit of Battle Hill at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn,
New York, next to his wife and with a copy of the score of
Mahler's Fifth Symphony lying across his heart. Bernstein was the
recipient of many honors, including eleven Emmy Awards, one Tony
Award, seventeen Grammy Awards, including the Lifetime
Achievement, and the Kennedy Center Honor. On Sale Until Midnight

August 25, 1954: #BOTD: #HBD! Elvis
Costello, English singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record
producer is #born Declan Patrick MacManus, the son of Lilian Alda
(nee Ablett, b. 1927, Liverpool) and Ross MacManus (born in
Birkenhead, Cheshire; 1927-2011), a singer noted for his beautiful
voice, and jazz trumpeter with the Joe Loss Orchestra, who as a
solo cabaret act had a hit in Australia (as Day Costello) with his
cover version of The Beatles "The Long and Winding Road"
in 1970. Elvis Costello OBE has won multiple awards in his career,
including Grammy Awards in 1999 and 2020, and has twice been
nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Male Artist. In
2003, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In
2004, Rolling Stone ranked Costello number 80 on its list of the
100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Costello began his career as
part of London's pub rock scene in the early 1970s and later
became associated with the first wave of the British punk and new
wave movement that emerged in the mid-to-late 1970s. His
critically acclaimed debut album My Aim Is True was released in
1977. Shortly after recording it, he formed the Attractions as his
backing band. His second album This Year's Model was released in
1978, and was ranked number 11 by Rolling Stone on its list of the
best albums from 1967 to 1987. His third album Armed Forces was
released in 1979, and features his highest-charting single,
"Oliver's Army" (number 2 in the UK). His biggest single
in the U.S., the Top 20 hit "Veronica", was one of
several songs Costello co-wrote with Paul McCartney. His first
three albums all appeared on Rolling Stone's list of the 500
Greatest Albums of All Time. Costello and the Attractions toured
and recorded together for the better part of a decade, though
differences between them caused a split by 1986. Much of
Costello's work since has been as a solo artist, though reunions
with members of the Attractions have been credited to the group
over the years. Costello's lyrics employ a wide vocabulary and
frequent wordplay. His music has drawn on many diverse genres; one
critic described him as a "pop encyclopaedia", able to
"reinvent the past in his own image". Costello has
co-written several original songs for motion pictures, including
"God Give Me Strength" from Grace of My Heart (1996,
with Burt Bacharach) and "The Scarlet Tide" from Cold
Mountain (2003, with T-Bone Burnett). For the latter, Elvis was
nominated (along with Burnett) for the Academy Award for Best
Original Song and the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for
Visual Media. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT!

August 25, 1930: #BOTD: #HBD! Sir Sean
Connery, Scottish actor, producer and sex symbol (d. October 31,
2020) is #born Thomas Connery at the Royal Maternity Hospital in
Edinburgh, Scotland. He was the first actor to portray fictional
British secret agent James Bond on film, starring in seven Bond
films between 1962 and 1983. Originating the role in Dr. No,
Connery played Bond in six of Eon Productions' entries and made
his final appearance in Never Say Never Again. Connery began
acting in smaller theatre and television productions until his
breakout role as Bond. Although he did not enjoy the off-screen
attention the role gave him, the success of the Bond films brought
Connery offers from notable directors such as Alfred Hitchcock,
Sidney Lumet and John Huston. Their films in which Connery
appeared included Marnie (1964), The Hill (1965), Murder on the
Orient Express (1974), and The Man Who Would Be King (1975). He
also appeared in A Bridge Too Far (1977), Highlander (1986), The
Name of the Rose (1986), The Untouchables (1987), Indiana Jones
and the Last Crusade (1989), The Hunt for Red October (1990),
Dragonheart (1996), The Rock (1996), and Finding Forrester (2000).
Connery officially retired from acting in 2006, although he
briefly returned for voice-over roles in 2012. His achievements in
film were recognised with an Academy Award, two BAFTA Awards
(including the BAFTA Fellowship), and three Golden Globes,
including the Cecil B. DeMille Award and a Henrietta Award. In
1987, he was made a Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters in
France, and he received the US Kennedy Center Honors lifetime
achievement award in 1999. Connery was knighted in the 2000 New
Year Honours for services to film drama. Sean Connery died in his
sleep aged 90 at his home in the Lyford Cay community of Nassau in
the Bahamas. His death was announced by his family and Eon
Productions; although they did not disclose the cause of death,
his son Jason said he had been unwell for some time. A day later,
his widow revealed he had dementia in his final years. Connery's
death certificate was obtained by TMZ a month after his death,
showing the cause of death was pneumonia and respiratory failure,
and the time of death was listed as 1:30 am. His remains were
cremated, and the ashes were scattered in Scotland at undisclosed
locations in 2022. On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT!

Flight 1808: -- #DOTD: #RIP: Samantha Smith, American schoolgirl,

became famous during the Cold War between the United States and
the Soviet Union (b. June 29, 1972) #dies at the age of thirteen
in the Bar Harbor Airlines Flight 1808 Airplane Crash. On final
approach to Auburn/Lewiston Municipal Airport in Maine, the Bar
Harbor Airlines Beechcraft Model 99 crashed short of the runway,
killing all six passengers and two crew on board. She is buried at
Estabrook Cemetery in North Amity, Maine. Samantha Smith was born
Samantha Reed Smith in Houlton, Maine. In 1982, the 11 year old
American schoolgirl had written a letter to Soviet leader Yuri
Andropov asking, "Why do you want to conquer the whole world,
or at least our country?" To her surprise, Andropov replied
personally to her and offered an all-expense paid trip to the
U.S.S.R. She toured the country for two weeks amid worldwide
publicity and came to symbolize American and Soviet hopes for
peaceful co-existance. Smith attracted extensive media attention
in both countries as a "Goodwill Ambassador", becoming
known as America's Youngest Ambassador and subsequently
participating in peacemaking activities in Japan. With the
assistance of her father Arthur (an academic), she wrote a book
about her visit to the Soviet Union, Journey to the Soviet Union,
and later became a child actress, hosting a child-oriented special
on the 1984 United States presidential election for The Disney
